Red Lodge Clay Center – Short-Term Resident 2019

Vanna Ramirez is an emerging artist working primarily in ceramics, but also engages in painting, drawing, printmaking, fibers and sculpture. She recently graduated from Skidmore College in 2018 with a BS in Studio Art. Since then, she participated as a work-study student at Penland School of Crafts for their spring concentration class in clay with Terry Gess. She also attended NCECA’s 53rd Annual Conference of 2019 in Minneapolis as a Multicultural Fellow. This August, she will be attending a two-week clay workshop at Haystack Mountain School of Craft and will be working as a technical assistant for the instructor, Andile Dyalvane. Soon after, she will participate as a Short-Term Artist-in-Residence at the Red Lodge Clay Center in Montana for two months this fall. Meanwhile, she has relocated to her hometown in Chestertown, MD where she works two part-time jobs at Robert Ortiz Studios and Figg’s Ordinary, teaches a clay class at the River Arts Clay Studio, and continues to explore the possibilities of clay and the world of art.

I chose the path of an artist to risk discovering something new. I have no map, no tool for direction except for my first-hand experiences, intuition, and those around me who keep me moving forward. I am on a journey to understand what my curiosities mean and how they inspire my intentions and creations with clay—I am searching for my voice.

In my explorations, I enjoy constructing an assortment of forms, from functional to sculptural, as well as installation work. My interests lead me to investigate varying textures, landscapes, and intimate relationships among other subjects. I often like to think of my work as pieces of poetry, a moment to be shared in the hands of another.
