Artist-Invites-Artists Residency Information:

Eligibility: AIA Residencies generally occur between June – August annually, however, RLCC will consider AIA group dates throughout the year.

Red Lodge Clay Center invites individuals to coordinate and organize artist peer groups for residencies of 2-4 weeks. Typically, AIA’s are scheduled in summer, between June-August during one of four pre-determined date periods (Summer Sessions I-IV), but groups may also propose dates for anytime during the calendar year. Summer Session dates change year to year, please click on the online application portal above to see the coming year’s specific Session dates. RLCC lodging provides shared house accommodations up to 8 individuals and a large studio annex shared by all participants (we require a minimum of 5 participants for an AIA Group). We ask that your AIA application have a coherent rationale regarding the choice of participants and you will be asked to choose 3 date periods (ranked in order of ‘most’ to ‘least’ preferable) for your group to convene. AIA residents will be responsible for Residency Fees, travel & personal living expenses, as well as all material and firing expenses. Keep in mind that the Studio facility is 6 miles north of Resident Housing and residents will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the studio. Visit our Facilities page to learn more about the gallery, Resident Housing, and Fox Studio. Click here to see photos of past AIA’s.

NOTE FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN APPLYING FOR A WOOD FIRING ARTIST INVITES ARTIST GROUP:
If an artist is interested in firing a wood kiln (either the Train kiln or Catenary Arch), they will need to apply as an AIA Group through the AIA application process, and due to fire restrictions, we are only able to fire wood kilns mid October through mid December, and January through May 1st of each year.
Firing dates (within the “Shoulder Season” dates-see below), and length of desired residency need to be clearly outlined in the AIA application and should be included in the “comments” section of the application. The Lead Firer should include which kiln you wish to fire, and contact information and references for each artist in their wood fire group in their application. The minimum number of people required to fire the Train kiln is 6 total participants (8 maximum) and the minimum number of people required to fire the Catenary Arch is 4 participants (maximum 8).

Should a cancelation occur before August 15th, 2025 the accepted group’s Host is welcome to find a replacement for the AIA guest that canceled. The host must provide contact information (Full name, phone number and email address), and 2 references for any proposed alternate in their assigned block. Acceptance of alternates is at the discretion of the Director, and should be submitted no later than August 1st. Contracts are sent out no later than August 15th.  Contracts and First payments are due September 15th by all members of the accepted AIA group. Should a cancelation occur after September 15th, 2025, the AIA resident will forfeit their first payment of 50% of their residency fees. If, at the point of forfeiture,  they have paid their second payment (the remaining 50% of residency fees) those will be refunded to the AIA resident. Should the group drop out as a whole, each participants first payment will be forfeited, and the $150 deposit paid by the host will be forfeited. Any second payments that have been paid will be refunded to the respective residents. NOTE: First payments (approximately 50% of residency fees) are nonrefundable for each AIA resident and Host in an accepted AIA group. This is intended to hold the Block for the group, and each person’s place in the block.

Note: Children of the accepted AIA artists are welcome to stay in the AIA housing accommodations, but need to be included in the headcount of the total number of people listed in your application (as we have a total of 8 beds in the “Red House”). Due to safety and liability concerns, and because the Fox studios are professional artist spaces, (short term studio shares a building with the Long term, and Staff studios), children are not allowed to work in the Fox Studio.  A $25 per child/per day guest fee will be charged to the accompanying adult of each child (please specify which applying artists are bringing their children).  Private lessons and/or scheduled “Family Clay” days that are hosted in our community studio in our Gallery downtown are great ways to get your kids into some clay during your residency. We can also assist you in arranging for a private lesson for your children in our community studio space. Click here for more information on educational programming and booking a private lesson.
