Red Lodge Clay – Center Short-Term Resident 2016, 2017
My primary occupation is that of a teacher, so I focus on the tools and techniques of my trade, which shape the content of my work. I have been teaching at UNC for 10 years and continue to show my work both locally and nationally. My current body of ceramic art is designed to fit into people’s lives as well as the spaces they live and work in. My pots are primarily porcelain and focus on utility. In displaying pieces, my hope is to demystify and describe what happens in an artist’s studio on a day-to-day basis. My work is direct and honest as I hope not to hide the processes used to create the objects but to celebrate them. The shelving and pedestals I use are constructed from materials commonly found in a ceramics studio such as angle iron, plywood and welded steel.
