Playing it Cool features wood-fired pottery that has been “reduction cooled”, which is a firing process that reduces the amount of oxygen in a kiln as it cools, forcing the flame or fuel to pull oxygen out from the clay or glaze. While this firing process is the commonality, each artist employs various cooling methods and cooling temperatures, creating distinctly different results. Other diversifying factors to the process include varying kiln types, clay bodies, slips, glazes, wood sources, and firing durations.
The possibilities of the reduction cooled pallet, ranging from re-oxidized reds to metallic maroons and blacks are all celebrated in this collection of works made by potters from around the USA, and is guest curated by Seth Green.
Participating artists include Trevor Dunn, Seth Green, Stephen Heywood, Shasta Krueger, Hideo Mabuchi, Dan Murphy, Ted Neal, Lindsay Oesterritter, Josh Scott, and Megan Thomas.
